Artist Ron English, born in Texas in 1960, is certainly one of the most controversial mid-career artists on the contemporary art scene. As a painter musician and photographer, English believes that there is life beyond the borders of the flat canvas and the stark white, antiseptic like gallery walls and he wants his art to be an intricate part of it. For Ron English, his artwork and gallery shows are open doorways to an even larger involvement of art in the contemporary culture. English's art took form while in Texas where he studied and was awarded a BA from the University of Texas and an MFA from the University of North Texas. And it was in Texas where he began his billboard art. Starting as prop-making for his photography, English began to add his own editorial touches to existing billboards. This gave him the opportunity to do highly visible and enormously entertaining social protest, artistically. Even though his billboard messages disappeared quickly, English believes their impact on peoples perceptions exceeds the length of time they lasted. Ron English believes that life and art are closely intertwined. His paintings combine elements of Pop and Surrealism. His artistic approach is viewed as risky and provocative, yet fresh and exciting. |
