To capture the essence of anything architectural in a painting is not an
easy task. Most painters lose themselves in the mechanics of the
architectural form. But not in Elena Borstein's case. She captures the
personality of her Greek structures through shadows and implied movements.
There are no beings in Elena's paintings. They would only confuse and destroy the serenity of her peaceful Aegean scenes. One can only take peaceful refuge in Elena's landscapes through the use of imagination. This, however, is easily done. Elena's use of soft colors, subtle contrasts, and intimate shadows entices us to stroll up white, angular stairs to black recessed doorways, inviting us to enter its peaceful world. In fact, Borstein's pastel paintings are so still and inviting, one only wishes to be able to step out of this world and into Elena's, forever. |
